I hope this finds you
and your family well. I’m sure many of you had to evacuate are finally
now resettling back into a normal routine. My prayers and thoughts are
with any of you who have suffered any losses.
As far as last week’s
golf outing we had a fun time. Congrats go to Frank Sung who took
low net honors by posting a 65. Low gross honors go to
Curtis Chan for shooting the low gross score of 84. Below are the
results of our match play events and how everyone placed in individual
stroke play.
Details of our Seacoast Cup Match Play
Our Final 4 players
squared off last week and this is what happened:
Jensen vs. Newby -
John Jensen was ready to go and realizing that he had won his
first match over Coykendall, he was ready to take on Bob Newby. Newby
took an early lead and was 2 up after 3 holes. But Jensen kept his cool
and stuck to his game plan and won four straight holes and was 2 up
after hole #7. Newby made a few mental adjustments and decided to just
to play within himself and play hole by hole. By the time they reached
hole #10, Bob Newby was able square up the match. Both players were now
in the hunt to take command of the match. Newby dug down deep and was
able to win hole #10 to take the lead and he never looked back. Jensen
put up a fight by matching Bob but John needed to win the holes. By
hole 15 Bob’s lead was 3 up and he sealed the match by making his par
putt on the 16th hole. Jensen needed to sink his putt for a
birdie but it didn’t go in. The match ended and so did Jensen’s hopes
for the 2007 Seacoast Cup. Bob Newby described in the post match
interview that “John really had me worried during the front 9
holes. He didn’t make very many mistakes. He was making net pars and
birdies on his stroke holes. After hole 8 I began to play better. John
started to have some trouble and posted a few double bogeys. I realized
that I needed to play my game and play every hole like it was my last.
I was able to keep the ball in play and kept giving myself good chances
to make par. Once I got 2 up on John I knew I had control to finish the
match.”
Chan vs. Grow
- Curtis Chan was victorious in his match play duel with Bill
Grow. The match was all square after 9 holes. Bill played steady most
of the way and took a 1 up lead going into hole #17. But Curtis kept
his cool and made a 8 foot par putt to win the 17th hole and
to make the match all square. Both player’s felt the pressure going
into the 18th hole knowing that the winner of this hole would
go on to the finals to meet Bob Newby.. Bill had his short game going
and had been holding off all of Curtis’ attacks throughout the match.
After driving his tee shot short of the right fairway bunker, Bill
decided to lay up on this hole leaving him a 80 yards to the pin.
Curtis put a great drive off the tee leaving 135 yards to the hole.
Curtis only had held the lead one time during the entire match after
hole #3, and he knew he had to make something happen. He held his
composure and put his next shot just off the green. Bill hit his third
shot long onto the green leaving himself a lenthy 30 foot downhill
putt. His putt went long past the hole leaving him a 10 ft putt for
bogey. It all ended when Curtis sank his18 foot putt for birdie from
the fringe to win the hole and match. Both players acknowledged what a
tough match it was. In the post game interview room Curtis said,
“I knew I had to minimize my mistakes to keep up with Bill’s
game. He’s got an incredible consistent short game. He doesn’t miss
too many putts within 10 feet. When he laid up on #18, I knew this was
my only chance. I had to go for it and get it in close to put pressure
on him. Fortunately I was able to calculate the wind factor that was
quite strong at the time and I used a three-quarter swing with my 7 iron
to get just past the pin into the wind from 135 yards. The wind was
fierce. You have all the water on18 staring at you and the wind blowing
right into you. I just told myself that this was the time to hit and
make the shot. ..and I did it! Bill was just 80 yards out on his
approach shot, but he hit it a bit too long, leaving himself a difficult
long down-hiller. It was one the tightest matches I’ve ever played.
Bill is a great competitor and I’m elated that I won. My hat is off to
him for his tough competitive play today.”
Curtis Chan will
now meet Bob Newby for the final match to determine our 2007
Seacoast Cup Champion on Friday, November 16. Matches for 3rd
and 4th place will take place along with consolation matches
for those who made it to the top 8 positions. All others who desire to
play at our next event are welcomed to play in our regular gross and net
stroke play. Please reply to this email if you want to participate.
