Chan vs. Coykendall
: Kent and Curtis met early
at the course (6:30a) to get their match in.
The sun was just coming out and the fog kept visibility confined
to only 50-80 yards. Both
players knew it would come down to who kept ball in play and not make
the big mistakes would win the match.
Kent kept his game under control inspite of the visability
impairment from the fog.
Curtis was a bit out of control and even sustained an injury by
taking his own shot off a tree...he explained that his ball came off the
hazel and directly impacting his lower jaw….but Curtis knew he had to
plow ahead and kept playing.
By the time the fog lifted on the 6th hole, Kent had
made a comfortable 3 up lead. Curtis made a last charge at Kent’s 3 up
lead and was able to get within 1, but on the 17th hole, his
drive found the river, and parring out with a 2 stroke penalty was too
much to overcome. Kent was
relieved as he felt all the momentum had shifted to Curtis’ game until
Curtis’ ball found the water.
Curtis Chan (2008 Seacoast Champion) congratulated Kent on his
win and wished Kent all the best for the remaining rounds of the 2010
Seacoast Cup Championship.

Olson vs. Fitzpatrick
Jon Olson and Lee Fitzpatrick mutually agreed to play their match
at a later date. The match
took place at Encinitas Ranch GC.
(The front nine and the back nine were played in reverse order).
Both players were familiar with the course and were
excited to go as
it was both of their first
appearance in the Seacoast Cup Playoffs.
The match was under Jon’s control most of the way as he built up
a 2 up lead. Lee kept up his pace and knew that if he played steady he
might find an opening someone during the match.
The opening came when Jon bogied the 14th hole, while
Lee putted out for par.
Then on the 15th par 3 hole, Lee surprisingly chipped in for
birdie, taking the match to 1 up in Jon’s favor.
Jon now felt his control of the match begin to slip away .
Lee now felt the competitive juices flow through his bloodstream
and a renewed burst of energy to get back into this match.
Plus he had 1 stoke on the remaining 3 holes.
This was the chance he needed.
With this, Lee held steady and was able to match Jon’s play
stroke for stroke and finally end the match with a 2 up lead.
 |
NOTE: Winner of Tiebreaker was determined by going to the score card’s
#1 handicap hole.
Frisco vs. Freitas
This match was a “seasaw” battle as both players gave up shots, but then
also made their share of shots.
Justin finally took control by the 14th hole and felt
the match was in his hand, but then on #17 he took a double bogey which
opened the door for Jim who salvaged a bogey and to cut into Justin’s
lead. Being 1 down, Jim
knew his chances were “now or never” in getting a chance to win.
On the final hole Jim flawlessly put his approach shot onto the
green and two putted for par (net birdie), to win the hole.
Justin somehow let the door open to wide and saw his match fall
into Jim’s pocket. The
tiebreaker was the clincher as Jim Freitas stroked on the #1 handicap
hole and therefore was declared the winner of the match.

Fuller
vs Grow:
This match got underway in the fog as all the matches today
began. Jay somehow found
his 2nd shot fall out of the fog onto the green and was able
to tap out for par and take the early lead. Bill didn’t get flustered
and realized that the match was for 18 holes and knew he had a lot of
golf ahead of him. By the
time the 10th hole was finished, Bill finally was able to get
his first lead in the match.
Jay felt that something in his swing wasn’t right and trying to
make the adjustments was not happening for him.
Then on #12 Jay found himself putting out for double bogey which
opened the door wide open for Bill to take the lead again for the last
time. Jay tried
desperately to cut into the 3 up
lead the Bill had by the end of 15 holes, but came up short as he gave
up the last hole by taking the unwelcomed triple bogey on the 18th
hole (par 5). This
finalized Bill’s charge for the win.
Jay humbly congratulated Bill on the win and could only shake his
head at his personal unsteady play for the round.
Players Bracket
- In addition to the top 12 players squaring off to determine our
2010 Seacoast Cup Champion over the next few events, a "Player's
Bracket" match play competition also got underway. All players who
are not competing in the Championship Bracket, are welcomed to
participate to compete in "match play" format in the "Player's
Bracket." Below are the guidelines and rules for this bracket.
Player’s Bracket Overview and Rules
1.
Player’s Bracket
is the playing format for those players who are not competing in the
Seacoast Championship
Bracket. Each week
players in this bracket will be competing in “match play”
competition. Points
will be earned for wins and participation.
Only players who are not in
the “Championship Bracket” may participate in the “Players Bracket”
to earn points . A
player who loses a match in the Championship bracket may participate
in the Player’s bracket in the next round.
Points for the loss in the
Championship Bracket will be given to the player equal to the amount
allocated for that previous round.
As the playoffs progress towards the end of the year, each
event will have a higher value in points.
The player with the most points at the end of the
Championship Round will be declared the winner of the Player’s
bracket.
2.
Before each round, the tournament committee will rank participating
players according to: points earned and monthly index.
Players will then be matched up in order to compete in match
play for the next rounds given points.
Players without an official index may participate, but will
be assigned an index for the round.
If there are an uneven amount of players so that a player is
without a match opponent, the tournament committee may assign
another player from the “Championship” bracket for competition sake,
or a blind draw will be utilized from the field.
