Seacoast Christian

Golf Club an affiliate club of the Southern California Golf Association

Encinitas Ranch GC

Friday  September 12, 2008

Our club’s playoff season is now here and the 12 top players in our points standing are all set to go to determine our new 2008 Club Champion who will take home the Seacoast Cup.  Bob Newby 2007 Champion came to the course today ready with his new Talyor Made R7 driver to defend his title.  Today’s matches consisted of the Wild Card matches:

Match 1

Dan Anderson (5) vs. Bill Grow (12)

Match 2

John Jensen (6) vs Tony Spires (11)

Match 3

Darren Maglidt (7)  vs. Michael Gibbs (10)

Match 4

Bob Newby (8)  vs. Larry Wood (9)

Note:  Winners of the Wild Card Matches will advance to the next round, Quarter Finals, and will be matched up against our clubs top four players who earned a 1st round bye.  Curtis Chan (1), Kent Coykendall (2), Darryn Prince (3), and Mike Haug (4).

Each player had their game face on as they new their whole golf season was at stake.  Here were some pre match comments and notes regarding each match:

Anderson vs. Grow – Dan Anderson has not been playing at all over the past 2 weeks.  He feels he’s been a bite rusty with this game and can only hope for the best.   Bill Grow knows he is up against a tough opponent in Dan Anderson, but he trust his short game will keep him in the match and will ultimately help him win over Dan.

Jensen vs. Spires – Jensen admitted that his desire this past week to put some time at the driving range never came into fruition.  He says he can only hope that the 2008 Golf Extravaganza (where he play 54 holes of golf over two days in a roll) perhaps would provide him the necessary practice which he needed to help groove his swing.  Tony Spires was cool and collected on the driving range and felt that as long as he played his game and minimized the “big score” then he would come out victorious.

Newby  vs. Wood – Bob Newby recently changed to a R7 Taylor Made driver and he felt that the extra weighted club head would keep his driving game intact. Larry Wood played a round earlier in the week and felt that his game was ready to shine today.  He realized that he had a tough opponent in taking on the 2007 Seacoast Champion Bob Newby, but Larry felt a special confidence in his game and swing this week.

Maglidt vs. Gibb -  (Match played on Wed August 27, 2008)  Scheduled earlier and approved by tournament chairman.  See results below.

Wild Card Match Play Score Cards – note for match play, the lower handicap player is given the difference between the 2 players calculated monthly course handicap.

Anderson vs. GrowAnderson wins 7 and 5.  Dan kept his game in check and didn’t make many mistakes.  Bill Grow scored a few double bogies early on allowing Dan to get an early lead.  By hole 10 , Dan had a 4 up lead and his game remained very stead as he shot an incredible round 76 for the day.  Bill Grow couldn’t match Dan’s super play and any score short of par meant a winning hole for Dan.  By hole 13, Dan won his match.  Congratulations to Dan for his great play !

Jensen vs. Spires Jensen wins 3 and 2.   Tony Spires took the early lead as Jensen made some golf blunders and scored several double and triple bogies early on.  By hole 4 Tony had a 3 hole lead.  Then the tide shifted and Tony began to score a few double bogies.  Jensen sensing that he needed to calm his swing down began to play within himself and he pared the difficult hole #4.  This gave his some confidence and by hole 10, the match as all square.  Jensen again realized that Tony Spires had opened a door for him, and he realized if he just match Tony’s score he was have a chance.  By hole 16, Jensen was able to close out the match and win 3 and 2.  Congratulations to John Jensen for finding his game and winning his match and posting a 89. (John said in the past game interview room that this was only the 2nd time he broke 90.)

Stroke  adjustments

Maglidt vs. Gibb Maglidt wins 3 and 2.  Both players met and played their match on 8/27/2008.  Michael Gibb held his own as Darren pressed hard to not make any mistakes.  Early on both players scored well and matched each other’s score and by hole 10 the match was all square.  The match continued to be tied until hole 12 when Michale Gibb took advantage of Darren’s double bogey and scored a par to give him the 1 up lead.  Darren then dug deep inside and went on a 4 hole scoring frenzy and played hole’s #13-16 1 under par.  With his stroke allotment, Michael Gibb needed birdies on all these holes to match Darren’s great play.  By hole #16, Darren closed out the match and won 3 and 2.  Congratulations to Darren on his win.

Newby vs. Wood Wood wins 3 and 2.  Bob  Newby started out strong by winning the 1st hole.   But Larry Wood struck back quickly and evened the match on the 2nd hole.  After that, Larry kept Bob Newby’s game in check by going up 4 on hole #10.  Bob Newby knew he had to dig deep and finally by hole #16 he was able to cut the lead in half and Larry only had a him by 2 up going into hole 17.  There, Bob finally felt the dagger when Larry scored a par (net birdie)  to close out the match 3 and 1.  Larry overcame all the pressure and took out our 2007 Seacoast Cup Champion.  Congratulations Larry on your win !!!
